What Makes Writing Flow?

What do we mean when we talk about “flow”? “Flow” is a function of grammar, word choice, and transitional language, but it also connects to readers’ expectations. In this class, we’ll analyze a variety of texts for flow and tackle the big question of when, if ever, authors might intentionally disrupt it.

Presenter Bio

A.D. Nauman is an award-winning writer whose short fiction has appeared in Chicago Quarterly ReviewWillow SpringsTriQuarterlyNecessary FictionThe Literary Review, and many other journals. Nauman is an Illinois Arts Council Literary Award recipient, whose work has been produced by Stories on Stage and broadcast on NPR. Though now a Midwesterner, Nauman grew up mostly in Tidewater, Virginia. Her next project is Down the Steep(Regal House Press; October 10, 2023; ISBN 9781646033706), a compelling coming-of-age novel set in Civil Rights-era Virginia about the daughter of a klansman overcoming her own racism.
