SHORT STORIES: Crafting a Cohesive Collection, presented by Bill Glose

This session will explain the benefits to having a theme for your collection and detail the various ways a book of short fiction can be structured. How to derive a theme from stories already written will also be discussed.

More Small Steps to Indie Publishing

by Drema Deòraich

Indie authors need to decide up front how they will publish. You can choose to distribute through Amazon KDP Select, which means that your ebook will be exclusive to Amazon for a requisite 90-day period; or you can “go wide,” which means you can distribute your books, in whatever format, wherever you want. Note that if you join KDP Select, paperbacks and hardbacks are not part of the Select program, and can be distributed wherever and however you want, so if you choose KDP Select, you can also choose another print-on-demand option. The biggest and possibly best-known is IngramSpark, since libraries, bookstores, and a multitude of other resellers buy from them. This is the path I chose—KDP Select and IngramSpark.

But wide publication is also an option. There are many platforms to which you can publish: Amazon (though not KDP Select, as mentioned above), Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes and Noble Press, Google Play, and so on. You can, if you like, upload your book(s) to each of these individually, and then track sales thereon yourself, or you can work through an aggregator—a company that distributes your book to all of those platforms for you.

There are a number of aggregators out there, and each one works a little differently. Do this research before you get to the publication stage of your project, because that choice will influence some of your marketing decisions. Keep in mind you’ll likely have to research this again when you’re ready to publish, because aggregators do sometimes come and go.

I used IngramSpark as the aggregator for my print books, but you can also use Draft2Digital. Some of these companies take an upfront fee to publish your work; Draft2Digital does not. Instead, it takes a cut of the retail price for each book sold. Each aggregator works differently, so know what you’re getting into before you dive in.

That’s it for this installation. See you next time!

DID YOU KNOW . . .

  1. William Shakespeare‘s legacy survives not only in his many plays, but also in his contributions to the English language. Did you know these phrases originally came from Shakespeare?
  • dead as a doornail
  • fair play
  • all of a sudden
  • in a pickle
  • night owl
  • wear your heart on your sleeve
  • star-crossed lovers
  • off with his head
  • green-eyed monster
2. American author William Faulkner wrote the outline to one of his novels on the walls of his writing office in Oxford, Mississippi. Visitors to Faulkner’s Rowan Oak can still see the author’s hand-written notes for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Fable on these walls.

3. Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlet Letter, helped start a Transcendental commune near Boston in 1841. However, Hawthorne left this commune a few months later after he found it difficult to write with all the blisters he got from cutting straw and shoveling manure. His lesser-known novel The Blithedale Romance recounts this experience.

4. Robinson Crusoe author Daniel Defoe tried his hand at many unsuccessful business ventures before he became a well-known pamphleteer and novelist. One of the weirdest things he ever tried to sell was perfume made from the secretions of cats’ butts.

Author SPOTLIGHT

Pamela Brothers Denyes

By Sandy Robinette and Pamela Brothers Denyes
PBDenyes_300dpi
As I Lay Dreaming, the chapbook of poems by Pamela Brothers Denyes, intrigues with its subtitle of “Poems on Reveries, Memories and Dreams.” A Virginia Beach native, this writer found her to be a woman of focused energy, filled with appreciation for her new creative writing adventures.

Happily, this includes sharing her work by publishing her poetry! Pamela self-published As I Lay Dreaming in September (available from the author or Amazon). Two more full-length collections, The Right Mistakes and The Widow’s Lovers, published by Kelsay Books, followed in October and November (available on Kelsay Books’ web site, soon on Amazon).

Pamela's career-based writing included contract nonfiction, instructional design and manuals, developmental and copy editing, and online/print writing for her regional newspaper and internet gateway. Retired now, she says she is happily harvesting forty years of poetry, song-writing, journals and travelogues to create new works–and fun!

She is inspired by the natural world, walking nearly every day. Pamela says, “The brevity of form in poetry is the most immediately accessible type of art when inspiration comes to me. A daily writer for a very long time, her affirmation is ‘May I never cease to be amazed!’

Pamela is a fan of writer’s conferences, and has found unique, invigorating, and useful instruction from events in Virginia, Florida, and Colorado. We welcomed her in 2019 to our own HRW Annual Conference where she won the first-place poetry prize. The poem, “Mrs. Creekmore’s May Peas,” was her very first submission of her own poetry! Her advice to all writers: “read books in your genre, read craft books in your genre, write, edit, edit more, and submit regularly.” It has worked for her, so try it!
