  • A Dark and Stormy Opening: How to Begin your Work—A good editor can spot a skillful writer in one paragraph. Almost no one in publishing reads more than 10 pages unless he is captivated by the story. Beginnings are vital—no one ever gets past the bad ones. This workshop discusses the structure of novels and short stories and how to begin them for maximum effect.

  • So You Want to Write for Children?—A discussion of trends in children's publishing and advice on how to sell your unpublished work and market the work you sell.

  • From Life to Art: Steps to Writing Your Memoir— A discussion of the early steps in writing a memoir, including how to generate ideas for thematic focus, how to write specific scenes to bring those ideas to life, and how to find good potential organizing principles for a book-length manuscript.

  • Surviving a Novel—The highways are littered with the road kill of novels conceived, novels begun, novels abandoned. In this workshop we’ll dig into what it takes to bring your novel to fruition, from the deep fishing for themes and characters to recognizing the story’s voice, through the discipline, psychology, and spirituality of staying the course.
