Pete Freas

Born near Cleveland, Ohio, Pete grew up with a love of language and a pervasive hunger to write. Studying at six assorted universities, he accumulated two bachelor degrees and two master degrees. A retired Navy helicopter pilot, Pete taught in Hampton Roads public schools for seven years before retiring again. He founded Chesapeake Bay Poets where he maintains a poetry website (, including an interactive Poetry Map of Hampton Roads, edits A Line in Time (a weekly online poetry newsletter), and publishes Skipping Stones, an annual poetry anthology by Hampton Roads poets. He expects Skipping Stones 2008 to be released in August. Published in regional publications, he has also written and published three chapbooks. In 2007 Pete received the prestigious ALLI Award for contributions to the arts in the Hampton Roads community. He has conducted workshops at several area middle and high schools. Pete is South-East Region Vice-President of the Poetry Society of Virginia, an active member of the CNU Writer's Council , and is a member of Hampton Roads Writers. He is currently co-authoring a book of contemporary poems on familiar Biblical scripture, and is compiling his book of war poetry. His Mindworm Press, a licensed small press-publishing company in Chesapeake, publishes chapbooks and commercial books.
