 Thursday, September 16, 2010 at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, Virginia Beach BLVD, VB from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. This open mic will be a celebration of poetry and of the life of Dr. Bill Carroll, an extraordinary man and dear friend of HRW. PLEASE BRING A CAN OF FOOD TO DONATE TO THE FOODBANK OF SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA.
Please bring 3-5 minutes of material to share. Sign-ups to read begin at 6PM and the readings run from 6:30 to 8:30. This open mic is open to everyone, writers and readers alike.

TRAVELING PEN SERIES WORKSHOP #3--Plotting the Mystery--Saturday, November 6 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Hampton Main Library, 4207 Victoria Blvd, Hampton. Check-in begins at 9:15. This workshop consists of discussion and exercises in pacing, creating tension, weaving sub-plots, creating high points, story boards, and plot outlines. Attendees will get advice on five-minute hooks, handling backstory, and building conflict. Maria Hudgins,
author of the Dotsy Lamb Travel Mysteries, will facilitate this workshop. NOTE: $13 for HRW members and $15 for all others.

2011 Events
TRAVELING PEN SERIES WORKSHOP #4-- Our Voices, Our Time: An Introductory Poetry Workshop -- Saturday, Jan 15, 2011, Greenbrier Library, 1214 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Check-in begins at 9:15. Participants will be exposed to the general mechanics and devices used in poetry, such as diction, tone, voice, line breaks, imagery, and sound, and this exposure will teach them how to identify the dynamic parts of poems and critically engage with the poetry.
Synnika Lofton, poet/recording artist who has recorded more than thirty albums of poetry, including his highly praised debut, The New Breed will facilitate this workshop. Lofton received a B.A. and M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goddard College. NOTE: $13 for HRW members and $15 for all others.

Instructor--Author of 17 published novels, Judi McCoy also teaches the two-day aspiring author course each year at the Romantic Times Booklovers’ convention. The dog walker mysteries feature Ellie Engleman, a dog walker on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, who speaks to her dogs and understands what they say to her.
