FREE 10-minute One-on-One Literary Agent Pitch Sessions

The10-minute "elevator pitch" provides you the chance to present the idea of your book the way you would if you were on a slow elevator ride with an agent -- so compellingly that the agent would say, "Send me the whole manuscript."

Conference attendees have the opportunity to sign up for 10 minutes with an agent FREE of charge. Slots will be filled on a first-come basis, with priority given to members of Hampton Roads Writers. Please indicate your order of agent preference on the conference registration form.  Come prepared to pitch your project.

LITERARY AGENTS

picture
of Ethan Vaughan -- a literary agent at Kimberley Cameron and Associates, has worked in journalism since 2007, but his first introduction to publishing came with a 2011 summer internship at Folio Literary Management in New York, where he worked under the redoubtable Jeff Kleinman and received a crash course in agenting. Vaughan is seeking: Fantasy/sci-fi (particularly of the young adult variety); women’s fiction; literary fiction; historical fiction; and historical nonfiction. While he loves escaping into an incredible new world, he's a big sucker for really well-done literary fiction (something like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which sheds light on who we are as humans). As regards his first love, fantasy, he is very selective, strongly prefering fantasy that is somehow grounded in the real world, be that through the integration of mythology (as in the Percy Jackson series) or through a fantasy universe being hidden inside of our own (as in the Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia series).

of Jeff OurvanJeff Ourvan -- is a literary agent at Jennifer Lyons Literary Agency, an attorney, published author, and former editor. He also represents fiction works, particularly in the young adult, thriller and international fiction categories. Prior to his career as a literary agent, Jeff was a litigator for many years at two large New York-based corporate law firms; a communications consultant working in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo; and an editor of Living Buddhism magazine. One of Jeff’s upcoming works, How To Coach Youth Baseball So Every Kid Wins, was distributed by Norton in Spring 2012. Jeff is married to the novelist Jessica Jiji.

Perfecting Your Pitch
Learn how to write (and deliver) the perfect elevator pitch. Most authors know how to write—until it comes to writing about themselves. We’ll go over the key points in both in-person and in-writing pitches and how to make yourself and your work attractive from the word go. After a brief presentation on the dos and don'ts of pitching, some attendees will have a chance to pitch their own work.
